Shooting
Grouse over English setters
(12th August – Mid September)
Strathmore has been famed as a dogging grouse moor since the days of black powder and has been shot on a two gun per party, four day week since the 19th century.
The estate currently runs two parties from 12th August until mid September shooting over their English Setters. The grouse moors of Braehour, Backlass and Strathmore are situated in what has been dubbed “The last great wilderness in Europe”. Ducks & Geese
(September -- December)
Ducks and geese can be flighted on several ponds and lochs just a few minutes from the lodge and when combined with rough shooting or stalking can add variety and interest to sporting days from September through to December. Rough shooting
(October onwards)
Rough shooting is available on Strathmore Estate and provides great variety. All game is wild and includes the possibility of the following species – Grey Lag and Pinkfoot Geese, Teal, Widgeon and Mallard Ducks, Snipe, Woodcock, Grouse, Pheasant and Partridge, Rabbits, Blue Hares and Brown Hares. Stalking
Red stags
(Mid September -- 20th October)
Mature Red stags begin to arrive on the ground towards the end of September prior to the rut. The early days of the four week season provide challenging stalking with fresh arrivals of stags moving onto the ground.
As the season progresses and the rut gets underway stalking “amongst the deer” is exhilarating. Stalking in the vast openness of Caithness can be particularly challenging and rewarding. Hinds & roe does
In the course of hind stalking the opportunity to take a roe doe will sometimes arise. Occasionally it is possible not only to stalk both species in one day but in fact to take both species in a single stalk.
Due to the shortness of the winter day the best of the hind stalking is to be had in November, early December and February. Hinds are in season in Scotland from 21st October until 15 February.
The roe does continue until 31st March. Roe bucks
A small but increasing roe population will provide some good sport early on in the season. The season runs from 1st April until 20th October. Fishing
Salmon
The Thurso river is said to be one of Scotland’s top five salmon rivers to be managed as an entire river system. Geographically fortunate, its headwaters rise amongst the unspoiled upland moors of Caithness, flowing over a largely gravel bottom, the principal tributary’s merge and flow into Loch More. There are 12 rotating beats on the river and each beat fishes 2 rods. Salmon fishing can be arranged throughout the season through George Goldsmith or Thurso River Ltd.
At the outlet of Loch More there is a dam and a fish ladder. The dam was built over a hundred years ago specifically with angling in mind. The dam permits the beats downstream to be maintained at an optimum fishing level through up to six weeks of drought.
Below Loch More the river flows first through moorland continuing in pools and streams down through farmland to its estuary at Thurso on the wild north Atlantic coast. Strathmore Lodge has a wonderful aspect overlooking Beat 12. Trout
There are three trout lochs on the Strathmore Estate for tenants to fish which are easily accessible from the lodge. So a cast before breakfast or after dinner is there to be enjoyed! There are further lochs which require a walk of up to three miles but offer the opportunity to fish in a vast and timeless landscape.
